SSDs have been dropping in price consistently for quite some time and I predict they may even be a more economical solution than standard HDDs by 2016. Now it looks like the price of SSDs is "in a free fall", according to a new InformationWeek report by Jim O'Reilly.

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea's Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co Ltd announced on Friday it will exit the hard disk drive motor business and sell assets related to the operations in order to concentrate its efforts on its core businesses.

A solid-state drive (SSD) (also known as a solid-state disk) is a data storage device that uses integrated circuit assemblies as memory to store data persistently. An SSD contains no actual disk or a drive motor to spin a disk. SD hard drives are able to withstand knocks, shocks and vibration which makes them ideal for using in laptops for example. Another benefit of SSD is their faster write and read capabilities of standard mechanical hard disk drives.
